Spider Vein Removal

Laser Vein treatments are laser treatments used to remove spider and reticular veins. During a Laser Vein treatment, your practitioner will apply ultrasound gel to the area being treated. The laser is then applied in "pulsed" to the entire area. A cooled tip minimizes discomfort on the area during the treatment and prevents side effects. Depending on the extent of the veins, each treatment takes between 15 and 60 minutes. Subsequent treatments are performed at 6 to 8 week intervals.

Who Is a Candidate?

Anyone who has veins that are less than 3mm in size, that understands the risks, costs and time necessary to acheive the full benefit of the procedure, and who has realistic expectations of the ultimate outcome. If your veins are larger than 5mm you are not a good candidate. If you have an underlying problem with the valves in your veins, you are not a good candidate. This can be determined during your consultation. If you are pregnant, take aspirin or other blood thinning medications, or have a medical condition that prevents your blood from clotting properly, you should not have this procedure.

If a vein goes completely away with treatment, it should not return, but occasionally the body reopens the vessel before it is completely reabsorbed or the vessel only partially responds. Because of this we find that most people need 2-3 treatments that are 6-8 weeks apart. Also, the factors that contributed to the enlarged veins such as standing for long periods of time, female hormones, pregnancy, being overweight, or a family history or varicose veins may not change, and therefore, new veins tend to form over time.

After the Procedure

This depends on the treatment type and condition. For "no downtime" procedures, it is expected that there will be moderate redness in the treated area, but no significant "downtime" is to be expected. You can expect to be able to return to work or leisure immediately following the procedure. For other more invasive procedures, downtime can last from a 2-7 days. In most cases we recommend wearing medical grade support stockings for a minimum of three days after the procedure. You should avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and aspirin products for 48 hours following the procedure.

Does Vein Removal Hurt?

Treatments may have some degree of pain. Most patients describe the treatments as similar to being snapped with a rubber band on the surface of the skin. For those patients more sensitive to discomfort, topical anesthetics are used before treatment for certain conditions.

Rosacea - helps seal off spider veins to control flushing and redness

Facial veins - dissipates enlarged or broken veins on the cheeks and around the nose

Angiomas - removes the tiny "drops of red" that can appear anywhere on the body and often trouble women on their chest.
