Liposuction

Definition

Liposuction or liposculpture—also referred to as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy—is a procedure that slims and sculpts the body by gently removing unwanted fat from specific areas including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks, and neck. Liposuction is an extremely popular procedure resulting in high levels of patient satisfaction, many times jumpstarting a cycle of positive lifestyle changes including healthy eating and exercise; in 2006, liposuction was the third most common cosmetic procedure (immediately following breast augmentation and rhinoplasty).

About the Procedure

Liposuction is performed on-site, in our fully accredited operating suite, during which time you are under general anesthesia; surgery times vary considerably depending on the size of the area and the amount of fat being removed. During the past decade, liposuction has benefited from numerous refinements in technique, of which the Beautologie surgeons take full advantage: Our surgeons do not simply remove fat deposits; they perform an ultra-specific combination of two of the most advanced liposculpture procedures, the tumescent and ultrasonic-assisted lipoplasty (UAL) techniques.

To begin with, a tiny incision is made, through which sterile fluid is injected; this (the tumescent technique) prepares the fat for easy removal, reduces blood loss, reduces post-surgery bruising, and provides anesthesia during and after surgery. Next, in stark contrast to the "scraping" typical of many liposuction procedures, the Beautologie surgeons use the UAL (ultrasonic-assisted lipoplasty) technique to liquefy and melt away fat deep beneath the skin. Finally, via a very narrow tube or fine cannula, this excess fat is gently suctioned away.

Why Beautologie?

As with every procedure performed at Beautologie, the surgeons utilize the most advanced, non-invasive techniques available and work extremely hard to keep incisions as inconspicuous as possible. By using the tumescent and UAL techniques, there is none of the harsh scraping traditionally associated with liposuction. This not only presents a safer alternative, but it sculpts the targeted region to achieve the smoothest appearance with the most minimal scarring, bruising, and discomfort possible.

At Beautologie, we place the utmost importance on the comfort and safety of patients. We reduce risks by using a careful, meticulous technique and sophisticated procedures only offered at the most advanced centers. This is combined with our trademark post-operative care, which includes healing scars via months of specialized follow-up treatments (at no additional cost); depending on your genetics, we can fade most scars to merely a pencil-thin, white line, strategically placed to be nearly invisible. Our emphasis on safety, combined with our extensive training and experience, enables us to provide you with long-lasting, smooth and natural results. Of equal importance, our doctors understand that cosmetic surgery requires serious consideration. We encourage patients to ask questions, as we are extremely empathetic to patient concerns and inquiries.

Results

You will observe a noticeable difference in the shape of your body quite soon after surgery. However, improvements will become even more apparent after four to six weeks, when most of the swelling has subsided. After about three months, any persistent mild swelling usually disappears, the final contour will be visible, and you will enjoy a smoother, tighter, slimmer appearance. Patients report time and time again how the procedure has not only positively impacted their self-esteem and enhanced their relationships, but also provided the motivation necessary to continue with a healthier, more active lifestyle. Additionally, they report loving the freedom to wear clothing that makes them feel sexy and desirable including swimsuits, low-rise jeans, and body-hugging tops and dresses. For many, liposuction provides a long-awaited resolution to feelings of insecurity and embarrassment regarding their bodies.

We invite you to make an appointment for a complimentary evaluation of your status. During your consultation, we will be able to provide you with realistic goals and expectations.

Consultation

Your safety and the success of your procedure are highly dependent on your candidness during the initial consultation; therefore, make sure to answer all questions thoroughly and honestly.

Your surgeon will likely discuss:

  • Medical history, current conditions, risk factors, and drug allergies
  • Reasons for undergoing the surgery including expectations and desired outcome
  • Current use of medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements and past and present use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs
  • Previous surgeries

During your consult, your surgeon will evaluate the above, examine the areas to be treated, and discuss potential outcomes of surgery as well as the rare risks. (If you have any health issues or are over 45 years of age, an exam/approval from your primary care physician will be required.) Remember, the consultation is your chance to ask questions and voice your concerns — the Beautologie doctors are happy to take as much time as necessary to provide answers to any and all of your questions.

Limitations of the Procedure

Liposuction is not intended as an overall weight loss solution, but rather to successfully remove excess fat from areas resistant to diet and exercise. Furthermore, while results are designed to be permanent, liposuction does not take the place of a healthy diet and physical activity; weight gain and lack of exercise will, over time, reverse the positive effects of the procedure. In order to maintain the post-surgery appearance, patients must continue with a health-conscious lifestyle. Additionally, while age is not a major consideration, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity, and, therefore, may not achieve the same results as a younger person with tighter skin and better muscle tone.

Cost

The costs of liposuction are not covered by insurance and will vary depending on the experience of the surgeon and the complexity of the procedure. Remember, a procedure offered significantly below market value is usually a sign of inexperience or cutting corners on the part of the surgeon. Additionally, don't forget to budget for all of the associated costs including anesthesia fees, medications, and medical tests. For your convenience, Beautologie offers patient financing plans that are extremely affordable. You will find the costs of procedures at Beautologie very comparable to those of surgeons with similar expertise.

Recovery

During your pre-op consultation, we will discuss the details of your recovery period including compression garments, fluid drainage, aftercare, removal or dissolution of stitches, and how to take prescribed medications (for pain and to reduce the risk of infection). At Beautologie, all procedures benefit from our excellence in post-operative care, which includes follow-up visits for as long as necessary as we diligently fade the incision(s) with specially designed tapes and creams. The most important thing is to follow our instructions with regard to post-op activity and precautions: Our team is comprised of some of the industry's leading cosmetic surgeons, so when it comes to recovery, we have thought of everything—we make sure you are fully prepared mentally and physically prior to undergoing surgery.

Please feel free to discuss all of your recovery concerns with your surgeon, including:

  • Which medications will I be prescribed?
  • When/how will my dressings and bandages be removed?
  • When/how are my stitches removed?
  • When can I resume work/normal activity/exercise?
  • When do I start my follow-up care?

*Remember, liposuction is an outpatient procedure; you will need someone to drive you home from our center, as well as to stay with you for at least the first night after surgery.

Complications

We are proud to say that we have never experienced a serious surgical complication; in fact, over 99% of patients undergo the procedure with only minimal to no side effects at all. However, no procedure is 100% risk free. The doctor and his staff will explain, in detail, any risks associated with your procedure, as well as ask that you read and sign consent forms to make certain you fully understand such risks. As you will notice, we go above and beyond to prevent complications. However, many post-operative occurrences are in your hands: You must plan an appropriate amount of time for recovery and limit your activities. Again, we encourage you to ask any and all questions regarding potential complications and how you can minimize the chance of their occurrence.

Possible risks of liposuction include:

Scarring or poor healing of incisions (most often caused by genetic scar syndromes or not following post-operative care instructions); bleeding (hematoma) (most often caused by resuming activity too soon); infection (very rare and reduced by the pre- and post-operative antibiotics and careful care of the patient); uneven contour; rippling or loose skin; skin or nerve damage; irregular pigmentation; fat or blood clots; excessive fluid loss or accumulation; thermal burn or heat injury; change in skin sensation; skin discoloration; swelling; asymmetry; pain, which may persist; damage to deeper structures such as nerves, blood vessels, muscles, lungs, and/or abdominal organs; persistent swelling in legs; deep vein thrombosis or cardiac and/or pulmonary complications; standard anesthesia risks; possibility of revisional surgery (very rare, as Beautologie boasts one of the lowest rates in the business).
